Répartition hors de France : Europe; Asie occidentale; Afrique septentrionale.

A rather slender plant with a terete scape bearing a head of flowers 30-75 cm long, growing from a bulb 15 mm diam.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It occurs in Britain only on the limestone rocks of the Avon Gorge, Bristol.

Fleurs : rose vif, nombreuses, serrées, en tète globuleuse ou ovale, ordinairement sans bulbilles; pédicelles graduellement épaissis sous la fleur, aussi longs ou plus longs qu'elle; périanthe en cloche; étamines saillantes, les 3 intérieures à filets trifides, la pointe médiane un peu plus longue
Floraison France : Juin-aout
Flowers: 5-6 mm diam., in a dense head 25-30 mm diam., without bulbils; bract or spathe 2-partite, short, lanceolate, acute; perianth segments reddish, erect, with a crenate keel; alternate filaments bifid, with short, acuminate lobes, the stamen in the sinus much exceeding the lobes; other filaments with somewhat dilated base.
